OUS Programs and Classes for High School Students
OREGON UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
- CAPITAL Center High School Technology Institute programs are designed to give students a solid background in the academic area of study, career exploration, employability skills, job shadows and structured work experiences. Students attend classes as part of the regular classroom program at their home high school. The use of technology is integrated into the course work. These programs can lead to post-secondary educational opportunities at the community college and four-year institutions, as well as career opportunities in industry. Students participating in these programs may earn college credits while completing high school.
- AEA SCHOLARSHIPS: Administered by OUS, the AeA scholarship program provides Oregon high school seniors planning to study engineering, computer science, or related fields an opportunity for four-year scholarships, summer internships, and industry mentors.
EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY (EOU) - LA GRANDE, OREGON
- REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS COMPETITION is a daylong event for individuals and teams in grades 8 – 12 in classes ranging from Pre-algebra to Calculus.
- You also may enjoy familiarizing yourself with some of the college student groups on campus for computer science students, including the International Electrical & Electronics Engineering Computer Society (IEEE) and The First Society in Computing.
OREGON INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (OREGON TECH OR OIT) - KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON
- TWIST: OIT’s Teen Women in Science and Technology program in Klamath Falls is a is a one-week residential career exploration program for teen women. Participants are introduced to technical career areas and the excitement of science and technology through hands-on laboratory and field exercises.
- Tech Challenge Science Expo is a science and engineering fair for students in grades 7-12 who reside in either Klamath or Lake Counties in Southern Oregon.
- High School Transition offers high school students in the Klamath Falls area the opportunity to take OIT classes on campus and earn dual high school-college credit for minimal cost.
- Oregon Tech's Advance Credit Program (ACP) consists of college courses taught in high schools by college-level qualified high school instructors. These courses are offered as part of the regular high school curriculum with the option of registering for college credit.

OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY (OSU) - CORVALLIS, OREGON
- SATURDAY ACADEMY (OSU): a year round program providing a rich variety of educational opportunities in science, math and technology for high school students.
- OSU SUMMER EXPERIENCE IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FOR YOUTH: this program pairs high school female and ethnic minority students with faculty mentors in engineering to conduct mini-research projects.
- SATURDAY ACADEMY (OSU) APPRENTICESHIP IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING offers high school freshmen through juniors a chance to work with an engineer or scientist for eight weeks during the summer.
- COLLEGE CREDIT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: this program allows high school students to start early on their college career while meeting high school graduation requirements, through the OSU Extended Campus.
- OSU K-12 ONLINE offers almost 30 high school classes via the web including technology classes.

PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY (PSU) - PORTLAND, OREGON
- SATURDAY ACADEMY (PORTLAND) offers exciting evening, weekend, and summer classes and workshops on a wide range of computer science and other science, engineering, math and other subjects.
- The APPRENTICESHIPS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (ASE) program helps match high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors with scientists and engineers for an 8-week summer apprenticeship in the Portland area in a professional, scientific or engineering environment.
- ADVOCATES FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, & MATHEMATICS (AWSEM) is a program in the Portland area for middle and high school girls that offers clubs, career exploration visits to area businesses, and classes in science, math, and engineering.
- MESA (MATHEMATICS, ENGINEERING, SCIENCE, ACHIEVEMENT) provides 6-12th grade students in the Portland area with counselors, workshops, college career preparation, competitions, and more to help them explore technology-based careers, achieve highly, enter college, and successfully compete in the work force.

SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY (SOU) - ASHLAND, OREGON
- SOU Tech Week offers students a week-long learn-by-doing technology camp on the SOU campus, designed to give you a taste of some of the “hottest technology fields.”
- The SOU “Explore Discover Dream” youth summer program and Kid’s College offer hands-on computer and technology related classes and camps in a dynamic college environment.
- SOU also offers two programs for high school students who wish to take university-level work while still in high school, including Advanced Southern Credit Program and Early Entry.

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON (UO) - EUGENE, OREGON
- SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (SEP) is a campus-based residential program offering stimulating academic experiences and spirited social activities designed for talented students currently in grades 6-10. Classes cover many subjects, including such areas as video technology, math history, and more.

WESTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY (WOU) - MONMOUTH, OREGON
- The WESTERN ADVENTURES IN MATH AND SCIENCE (WAMS) Program, supported in part by a federal grant from the National Science Foundation, offers a variety of cool math and science classes for varying grade levels at very low cost.

- TECHNO SCIENCE SUPERSITE calls itself the “definitive source for K-12 Science, Math, and Technology fun in and around the Portland Metropolitan area. Check out Techno Science Supersite’s research section for cool links to explore math science, and technology online. They also have great sections on Tech Camps, local science and technology clubs, classes, camps, internships, and more.
- ENGINEERING EDUCATION SERVICE CENTER includes links to information on schools, camps, technology schools, contests, jokes, scholarships, assessment quizzes, and more.
- BUSINESS EDUCATION COMPACT is an Oregon service connecting businesses with education partners. They have great links for jobs, college, student internship, and many other resources. For the Compact’s up to date information on high school and college internships click here.
- NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK. A national outreach week sponsored by many organizations, National Engineers Week encompasses national, state, and local efforts to educate youth people about engineering careers. The website has worlds of information on linked sites such as DISCOVER ENGINEERING ONLINE, A Sightseers Guide to Engineering , and INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING DAY.
- The DREAM DO IT Campaign is a national effort helping young adults find careers that they can be passionate about in manufacturing, which includes technology and computer science careers. The site includes links to internships, career quizzes, and more.
- SOFTWARE ASSOCIATION OF OREGON CONTEST: Each year every high school in Oregon is invited to send a team of students to compete in this statewide programming contest. Students from schools that do not offer computer science can form their own team.
- THE COMPUTER HISTORY MUSEUM, website states that their mission is to “preserve and protect for posterity artifacts of the information age.”
- SLASHDOT, a favorite of some computer scientists we’ve interviewed, calls itself “News for Nerds, stuff that matters.”
- NEW SCIENTISTS.COM the info-tech section of NewScientists.com has lively articles on hot topics in the information world as well as other links and resources for beginning scientists.
- YOUTH EXPLORING SCIENCE an Oregon non-profit supporting students in scientific research and study links to some great resources in Oregon and beyond for science education and fun.
- INTEL NORTHWEST SCIENCE EXPO is the Intel International Science and Engineering and the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge Affiliated Science Fair for Oregon and Southwest Washington.
- OREGON MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY located right here in Portland is one of the nation’s top ten museums offering interactive science exhibits, hands on demonstrations, as well as science and technology camps and classes. WEBOPEDIA calls itself “the only online dictionary and search engine you need for computer and Internet technology definitions.”

- OSU RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION OF WOMEN AND MINORITIES IN ENGINEERING OSU is committed to bringing more women and minorities to the field through recruitment, retention, and research.
- FAIRPLAY is a summer program developed by the Girl Scouts and Intel to introduce girls to engineering through hands on curriculum and project work at summer camp programs. Grades 7-10.
- The ENGINEERING EDUCATION SERVICE CENTER’s national links to programs for women and computer science.
- ENGINEER GIRL: This site celebrates women engineers, provides great career information on career opportunities in areas such as space, medicine, communications, and the environment, and includes links to contests, camps, and more.
- INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING DAY, a part of National Engineers Week, this national event provides information on engineering careers to over a million girls. The Website also has great links.
- THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY SECTION SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS offers the MARTINA TESTA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP to female high school seniors who intend to study engineering in a BA program.
